Mobile Internet Phenomena Preview: Are Facebook and Google the biggest brands for mobile traffic?

Written by Cam Cullen, VP of Government Solutions | Feb 17, 2020 3:20:40 PM

If I asked which brand has the largest traffic share on mobile, a few names come to mind. In the Global Internet Phenomena Report, we reported the traffic share of the six major brands on the internet is 43%. Are these brands the ones that dominate mobile traffic as well?

In the mobile world (at least when it comes to traffic), only two brands matter. Together, they consume even more of the mobile internet than the six major brands do on the global internet.

Combined, Facebook and Google are over 64% of all mobile internet traffic as seen in the Mobile Internet Phenomena Report. Google is led by YouTube, but also has significant contribution from Google Play and Search. Facebook's heavy hitters are Facebook Video, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook itself.

We'll talk specifics when we release the final report, but the "by Facebook" reach is continuing to grow (as we highlighted last week with the WhatsApp spotlight). Facebook Video has great growth this year (more on that in an upcoming blog!) and Instagram has been extremely strong, continuing to grow in the rankings.

The other major brands from the Global Report (Apple, Netflix, Amazon, and Microsoft) are still relevant on the mobile internet, but are dwarfed by Google and Facebook, so stay tuned to get the details.
