ClearSky Technologies

For more than a decade, ClearSky Technologies has been a leader in providing hosted infrastructure to mobile operators across the Americas. ClearSky’s powerful array of products and services includes hosted LTE services, traffic and policy management, small cell as a service, multi-generation SMS, MMS, and mobile Internet access.

The Challenge

As a mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE), ClearSky provides mobile data services to mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) across the Americas; each of ClearSky’s customers typically serves 10,000 to 100,000 subscribers.

To grow revenue, ClearSky can attract new customers, and sell more things (e.g., value-added services) to existing customers. To do so, ClearSky needed a solution that can affordably be deployed for each customer separately and that provides the capabilities to deliver value-added services.

The Solution

To attract new customers and grow revenue from existing customers, ClearSky uses the Sandvine platform to power a range of value-added services. For instance, beyond basic connectivity services, ClearSky’s customers can choose to purchase the Total Traffic Manager to optimize traffic flow on their networks and gain vital business intelligence.

Additionally, ClearSky provides their MVNO customers with the policy control capabilities needed to launch new revenue-generating subscriber services and to manage roaming costs. As ClearSky’s Senior Vice President of Business Development says, “To compete in the marketplace, it is critical for regional carriers to have access to the same advanced technology as national carriers.”

The MVNOs don’t necessarily know it, but these services are powered by Sandvine.

In February 2014, ClearSky announced the world’s first virtualized network policy control offering, made possible by the Sandvine Virtual Series, the software-only SDN- and NFV-ready version of our solution. The virtualized solution lets ClearSky provision and initiate instances on demand, as customers sign-up for services and at whatever scale (large and small) is required, leading to enormous efficiencies and cost-effectiveness.

In September 2016, Sandvine announced that ClearSky Technologies’ Total Traffic Manager service is now in use by more than a dozen mobile carriers in the United States.

“To compete effectively in today’s mobile marketplace, it is critical that operators have access to the same advanced technology as major operators,” said Frank Danielson, Chief Technology Officer for ClearSky. “The deployment flexibility Sandvine provides our Total Traffic Manager solution ensures that operators interested in rolling out new services to increase data revenue, and manage rapid data growth can do so in a manner that suits their technology requirements.”
