During my last year at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, I was happy to get the opportunity to write my bachelor thesis together with Procera. During this term I got a great amount of knowledge about how computer networking works in reality.
Since I am a network-geek, the second I entered Procera I felt that this would be really interesting. To test Procera's products you can't just click on a button and then everything is tested. Procera's products are advanced and you need a lot of time to understand how it works and you also need to know how you can use them since they are so flexible. The product needs to be tested in different ways with different test cases to make sure that it works. You need to produce a test case, then you have to execute, and afterwards you must analyze.
Now, almost 2 years after I put my first footstep into the Procera Office in Varberg, I still think that the product is really awesome. What Procera produces is very advanced technology and is not something every software developer gets the chance to work with. All in all, to test Procera's products demands a lot of knowledge on how networking works.
Being a student at Procera was both entertaining and challenging. Entertaining because I finally got to apply my university network knowledge (that was limited to school labs), to real life work. To see specific, classified, real data traffic live with the product was awesome. The challenging part was that it was my first time working with that specific programing language. Luckily I managed the almost impossible task with great supervision from the QA-team in Varberg.
To summarize my experience with Procera I would say that the company is a good continuation of school because there are no ”typical” days and you are never bored. You always have something new in the pipe; it can be a feature, a cool customer visit or a new bug introduced in an old protocol (such as heartbleed or Shellshock). Our products contain so many features, that even after your bachelor thesis, you have no complete view on how they work.
