Here at Procera, we have been busy planning for the year’s largest show, Mobile World Congress. On top of that, we’ve also been preparing for the year’s largest story: Turning industry NFV proofs of concepts (PoC) into a reality.
The networking industry is on the cusp of profound change. With NFV, no longer will operators find themselves in need of specialized, purpose-built hardware to deploy rigid network designs, holding them hostage to large investments and static deployments, unable to evolve with the need for new and differentiated services and solutions. With NFV, the opportunities for network operators will be substantial. Implementing networks with standard off-the-shelf hardware, decreasing capital and operational expenditures, and creating them in a flexible and agile manner that allows service agility, network adaptability, and the potential for the creation of new services and revenue models is truly game-changing.
Procera’s journey to turn NFV PoCs into a reality has been an exciting one. We have just announced our first live deployment of our virtualized solution with Boingo Wireless, a global wireless provider focusing on consumer experience. Boingo has installed a virtual CPE solution from Procera to both shape network traffic and apply subscriber profiles for service class differentiation. We are also excited to be a part of Boingo’s S.M.A.R.T. Network concept – an innovative approach to wireless networking that is aimed at improving user experience exponentially (a goal that is tightly in line with Procera’s mission) and advancing venue analytics capabilities.
We have also continued to push the boundaries of performance of inline NFV solutions through our work with Intel. Throughput speeds in excess of 150Gbps were recently achieved on Intel architecture-based COTS platforms, specifically Intel’s Xeon E5 processor, eliminating the performance barriers associated with deploying NFV solutions. These speeds also prove that our customers can begin taking advantage of the benefits of NFV today as the software version used in testing is already generally available. We will also be hosting tapas and drinks at MWC to showcase our real-time OSS/BSS NFV PoC with Openet. This PoC demonstrates a complete distributed Policy Management and Charging Control system, complete with telco-grade performance, scalability, and resilience, through the combination of PCRF and PCEF Virtual Network Functions (VNFs). Amartus, Intel and Red Hat are the other vendors participating in completing the NFV OSS/BSS solution. Join us March 4th from 17:00-19:00 in Barcelona at our booth to learn more about this PoC..
