With the recent explosion in popularity for data services like application zero-rating, it is more important than ever for operators to accurately charge customers for data usage. To help achieve this goal, Sandvine is launching the industry’s first 3GPP Release 12 standards compliant Traffic Detection Function (TDF).
Because of our TDF’s class-leading capabilities, operators can utilize advanced multi-dimensional application monitoring techniques over the Sd protocol. In practical terms, these capabilities enable operators to accurately identify fraudulent and malicious traffic as well as the individual applications and OTT services that subscribers are using.
As masquerading techniques and zero-rated fraud become more prevalent, it is critical for operators to detect fraudulent traffic. By leveraging our best-in-class TDF, operators can accurately classify fraud in real-time and report that information to the PCRF. Operators can then measure the impact of fraud on their network and take the appropriate actions.
In addition to our advanced application monitoring capabilities, we’re also launching a new TDF deployment model which builds on the 3GPP standard and enables operators to accurately apply charging rules during a system outage. This TDF architecture provides operators with true carrier grade resiliency and protects operators from revenue leakage.
More specifically, if an operator’s PCRF is disabled and can’t send charging and enforcement rules (over the Gx and Sd protocol) the Sandvine platform will perform charging based on the most recently cached charging rules and subscriber profiles.
