2009 Global Broadband Phenomena

Sandvine, a leader in intelligent broadband networks, has released its latest global broadband report, completed in October 2009. Data was collected from more than 20 million broadband subscribers spanning the Americas, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and the Asia Pacific region. This years findings show conclusively that consumer appetite for on-demand applications is both changing and growing.

Key Findings:

  • The peak network load (both subscribers and traffic) occurs from 7pm to 10pm, daily
  • There is widespread movement from bulk download “experience later” content acquisition to on-demand “experience now” media
  • On-demand applications continue to drive peak-time bandwidth utilization
  • There are distinct behavioral differences between light Internet users and heavy Internet users

“As more and more consumers rely on their Internet connection for on-demand entertainment it is increasingly necessary to protect their quality of experience. A key element for minimizing customer churn and increasing consumer satisfaction will be improving quality of experience especially in times of congestion when these real time applications are being utilized the most and are the most sensitive to latency and jitter.”
