Broadband networks are rapidly evolving from best-effort delivery to policy-based delivery that enables a blend of voice, video and data on a converged digital network. Since application and service types have unique traffic characteristics and network requirements, policy-based delivery requires accurate protocol identification to apply application-specific QoS policies for a positive subscriber experience. VoIP traffic, whether provided by a service provider, VoIP provider or chat service, benefits from a higher QoS than bandwidth-intensive applications such as file-sharing.
As DSL and FTTx speeds increase, the subsequent rise in bandwidth-intensive applications further contributes to dynamic and unpredictable network conditions. Real-time applications are sensitive to latency and jitter, and in times of congestion, can be prioritized over non-real-time applications, so that service quality is not degraded. Importantly, Sandvine implements such prioritization precisely at the Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS) port level, where the congestion is occurring.
With the rise of broadband traffic, DSL and FTTx providers are also striving to balance the costs of their infrastructure capacity expansions with service revenues. Sandvine enables differentiated service tiers, including usage-based billing based on quotas, or application-based plans. Such tiers are coupled with subscriber-friendly advice of usage notifications, whereby consumers are dynamically informed when they are nearing their quota limit and they can also access Web portals which display usage levels and provide options for quota top-up or plan upgrades.
Sandvine delivers a comprehensive product portfolio to help service providers with DSL and FTTx access networks manage operations efficiently with the performance and reliability demanded by Tier-1 broadband providers, while easily integrating into existing architectures.
